SFO-owned high-voltage cable caused blackout, airport says (sfchronicle.com)

Failing transmission cables and splices are a leading cause of airport power outages. What can be done about this, and who is doing it?

Following the 2017 power outage at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, which resulted in significant losses for Delta Airlines estimated at $11 million, Georgia Power introduced the Power Intelligence PowerCore solution to monitor every cable splice and switch connection in the airport’s labyrinth power delivery network.

This innovative approach aimed to enhance the resilience of power infrastructures at major airports by leveraging advanced radiometric analytics, real-time monitoring, and predictive maintenance strategies. The initiative represents a pivotal step towards mitigating the risk of future outages, ensuring more reliable power supply, and minimizing the financial and operational impacts of such events on airlines and passengers alike.

Since its installation in 2021 the Power Intelligence system has detected and averted two subsequent outages using the company’s patented Sigma Delta Tau method of automatically interpreting radiometric images to determine equipment condition,
